SXSW (South By Southwest) in Austin, TX has proven to be an amazing spot for great music and insane people watching.
The White Lies were so much fun at the Cedar Street bar yesterday - a great way to start off the evening and Metallica was the
perfect way to end it.

Many more pix to come…

Even the most glorious powder days can get trashed when your goggles are so smeared, life looks like an impressionist painting—up close. Without question, solid eyewear is key. Fortunately Spy has come up with goggles that not only fit well, they allow you to see every divot and bump ahead of your tips.
We like the Apollo Goggle for its clean simple lines and common sense functionality. Its lens is made with Spy Optic’s new ‘Mosaic’ technology, which uses multi-base curvatures to provide for a greater range of peripheral vision. The goggle’s low profile not only looks cool, but allows it to fit a multitude of helmets. Self-positioning hinges deliver a customized fit, and silicone strips on the inside of the strap secure everything in place. The light frame is flexible, which allows it to conform to your face, and features special triple layer ‘isotron’ foam lined with moisture-wicking fleece, making it is easy on wind-chafed cheeks.
Here’s the big bonus: The Ski Channel and Spy are teaming up! Each month one lucky mountain enthusiast will win a pair of Spy’s top of the line goggles! Rub the rabbit foot and enter here.

Spy Optic’s Kevin Windham’s A Big Hit In The Big Easy, Places 4th @ Hometown Race
The Louisiana native enjoys his return to New Orleans, rocks an NFL Saints tribute jersey & helmet and puts up one of his best finishes of ‘09
CARLSBAD, Calif., (March 16, 2009) – It was an excellent homecoming for Spy Optic’s Kevin Windham this past weekend at the New Orleans Superdome. Site of his memorable win in 1999, Windham – rocking his signature Spy Magneto goggles – was the toast of the French Quarter and didn’t disappoint his fans, racing to a well-deserved 4th place finish in the SX class main, round 11 of 2009 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship.
“All races as a pro carry the same weight, but only one can be so close to home for me,” said Windham. “I’m excited to be here and racing at this stage of my career.”
Participating in a milestone 150th main event start, Windham had qualified for the main earlier in the day with a podium 2nd place finish in his heat race, battling hard with defending champ Chad Reed early, then younger riders Tyler Bowers and Justin Brayton to take second place. In the same heat race Windham’s Spy Optic teammates, Nick Wey (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy /Troy Racing) and Bobby Kiniry (Monster Energy/Cernic’s/Kawasaki) were able to transfer in 7th and 9th, respectively.
In the main Windham got hemmed in a bit near the start, but got on his dragon and made his way into the top ten quickly. Once there he buckled down and showed the same speed and willingness to dice with other riders that landed him on the podium at Anaheim (Calif.) 2. While holding off Anaheim 1 winner Josh Grant, Windham battled with Justin Brayton – as he had in his heat race – then got by fellow Honda pilot Andrew Short and Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, who went down in the whoops on lap 13.
Windham’s battle with Short brought the Louisiana faithful up out of their seats to cheer on their home boy, who was clad in New Orleans Saints tribute gear and helmet.
“I think if I’d have got a little better start we could have challenged for the podium,” said Windham. “But Broc (Hepler, 3rd) and those guys were just too far out front by the time I caught up to Andrew (Short) and the others. But that was a lot of fun. Had a lot of friends and family in town and everyone had a great time.”
While Wey rode consistent and would wind up 12th in the SX main, Kiniry survived a scare get off in the sand section where he was run over by Ivan Tedesco. Kiniry was able to get back up and rolling again, with his Spy Optic Magnetos keeping the sans from getting anywhere inside the lenses.
Next up for Windham and the rest of the Spy Optic supercross racers is this weekend’s contest in St. Louis, round 12 of Monster Energy Supercross.

“JLaw” lays down the law, topping Stewart and Reed in practice and holding off numerous factory riders in the main on his privateer Yamaha
CARLSBAD, Calif., (March 9, 2009) – Spy Optic’s Jason “JLaw” Lawrence (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing) made a spectacular debut in the premier SX class at Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday, dominating the entire field in qualifying practice and then stepping up in the main and leading the majority of laps before placing 2nd to Chad Reed.
“He (Lawrence) should be thrilled. That was an impressive ride all around,” said SPEED TV commentator and former SX champ, Jeff Emig.
Upon arriving at Daytona, Lawrence, who suffered a setback in his first attempt at the SX class (flu-like symptoms at Indianapolis), made a statement early when he bested series points leaders Chad Reed and James Stewart in qualifying practice, putting up the only sub-1:07 lap time on the rugged Daytona track (1:06.998). With a prime gate pick in heat two, Lawrence rode fast – and smart – and pulled off a podium finish in his first SX class heat race which, in turn, gave him another good gate pick for the SX main.
Running yellow and black Spy Magneto goggles with clear anti-fog lenses and a stack of tear-offs that he’d barely need, Lawrence got a great start in the main and managed to avoid trouble caused when Stewart tucked his front tire in, at speed, at the end of the first turn and caused a massive pile up. Lawrence got out of the mess and set his sites on race leader Mike Alessi, who Lawrence caught and passed with a nice move in a tight ‘S-turn’ section of the Daytona SX course three laps into the main.
Lawrence the proceeded to put distance between himself and the rest of the field for the next dozen laps, overcoming a couple mistakes – including coming up short on a landing that no doubt stung his wrists. At the end of 15 laps, or what he’s used to running on the WSX Lites series, Lawrence would have been the winner. But the SX class is 20 laps and that would give series points leader veteran Chad Reed the amount of time he needed to catch up to Lawrence, who obliged the defending SX champ by allowing him past with no hassles. Lawrence then buckled down and showed his mettle on his privateer Yamaha by holding off a hard-charging pack of factory-backed racers, including Alessi, Davi Millsaps and Spy Optic’s own Kevin Windham (Geico Powersports/Honda).
“Chad (Reed) was able to make up a lot of time late in the race, closed the gap and got right up on me late and I didn’t try to be the hero or anything – just backed it down,” said Lawrence. “But I’m stoked, my first SX main event ever and I’m on the podium.”
For Windham is was another pro performance on the track where he won last year. Windham was 7th-fastest in qualifying practice, then made the podium (2nd) in the first heat race. In the main Windham also avoided the brunt of trouble at the start and came out after the first lap in 7th place. He then got by Tyler Bowers, Heath Voss, Thomas Hahn and, on lap 11, moved past Alessi in an exciting battle to put himself in podium position (3rd). Windham held onto 3rd for a couple laps before multi-time outdoor MX national champ Ryan Villopoto got by him. Windham would eventually drop back to 5th place – which was still his best finish since Anaheim 2 in January.
“Racing in Daytona during Bike Week is always a big deal for us,” said Windham. “The entire industry’s here and Daytona Speedway always puts on a first-rate event. Looking forward this weekend to racing in New Orleans again.” Note: Windham won the New Orleans SX class main event, on his birthday, in 1998.
Also: Spy Optic’s Nick Wey (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing) narrowly missed transferring to the main out of his heat race (11th, top nine move on) and then finished 3rd in the LCQ behind two factory Honda racers (Ivan Tedesco and Millsaps) where the top two transfer to the main. Wey’s still inside the top 15 (14th) with 55 points.
Next up for the Spy Optic-backed supercross racers is round 11 of the 2009 Monster Energy Supercross Series at New Orleans’ Superdome (March 14).

The Spy crew made its way up to Big Bear for Malayke’s second annual Office Booyz ’09 event this past Friday. Think neoprene wetsuits, business suits, capes, beer and just plain office fun shenanigans on the slopes for full-time industry employees. We wish all Friday’s were this fun. Thanks to Malayke and Transworld Business for putting this much appreciated “out of the office” work day. We can’t wait till next year!

K-Dub was on it and in place to podium when a mechanical failure market the end of his run at the inaugural Lucas Oil Stadium Supercross
CARLSBAD, Calif., (March 2, 2009) – Spy Optic’s Kevin “K-Dub” Windham (Geico Powersports/Honda) had a podium finish slip through his fingers this past weekend when – while running in 3rd place in the SX class main event – a mechanical failure at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium spelt the end of the night for the popular supercross veteran.
“In motorsports those things can sometime happen,” said Windham, who was celebrating his birthday the night of the Indy SX. “Fortunately situations like that have been very rare in my career, so you just have to live with it and move on. We’ve got Daytona this weekend and I’m looking forward to racing there. It’ll be a nice break from the stadium racing we’ve been doing, running down on the infield of Daytona International Speedway.”
Windham had transferred to the main by virtue of a 4th place finish in his heat race. Handling the technical Indy track well, Windham got a great start in the main and moved past Mike Alessi for third place on the second lap. The Mississippi native then moved up into 2nd place when James Stewart went down, but gave that spot back up to the former champ and settled back into third with some consistently fast lap times.
Then on lap 15 of the 20-lap contest Windham dropped off the track. The cause, as initially determined by the team, “mechanical failure.”
With the DNF Windham would come away from Indy with only one point, but he still remained in the top ten overall (9th with 112 points).
Also re-appearing on the SX class main even radar was Spy Optic’s Bobby Kiniry (Monster Energy/Cernic’s/Kawasaki). The New York native pulled the holeshot in his heat race and was out front before getting passed by Stewart and Chad Reed. Kiniry just about made the podium, but ran into some issues late in the heat and had to take the LCQ route in order to transfer to the main. Kiniry was up to the task, finishing 2nd in a hard-fought LCQ. In the SX class main even Kiniry (17th) would finish one spot behind Spy Optic’s Nick Wey (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing).
Also: The return of Spy Optic’s Jason Lawrence (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing) to supercross was put on hold for at least another week. Lawrence, who put up the 5th fastest time in SX class pro practice, reportedly fell ill prior to the start of his SX class heat race and spent the night watching from the sidelines. Lawrence is scheduled to race this weekend at Daytona.
Next up for the Spy Optic-backed supercross racers is round ten of the 2009 Monster Energy Supercross Series at Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, Fla. (March 7).
