Two days and counting! We can barely contain our excitement for Spy’s 7th Annual Boot Camp to begin on Friday, July 31st. The rad Spy van with flame tires and all will be picking up seven boot camp winners from LAX airport. The grand prize winners have been flown in from all across the US and Canada for an action packed week to party, watch the world’s best athletes compete for X Games 15 gold, ride motocross, surf and wakeboard with Spy’s team and even visit the Transworld Media offices.
This past weekend The US Open graced the shores Surf City Huntington Beach once again with its usual tornado of action sports activities driving people in droves down Main Street and out to the shores of the Pacific. While most retailers are bracing for the onslaught of Xtreme Tourists, SPY partnered with HSS and Jacks Surfboards for “THE SPY PIER BULL SHOWDOWN” to see who the real retail king of HB retail was. This did not come in the form of surf or sales contests, but a “Buck Wild” bull riding competition.
After receiving an informative schooling in the art of selling SPY Sunglasses and some cold filtered courage to boot, shop employees were pitted against one another in the ring. The bull riding ring. With a set up nothing shy of John Travolta’s in the early 80’s hit movie Urban Cowboy, the mechanical bull at Black Bull Chophouse anxiously waited to wreak havoc on these retail juggernauts. A team format was established with two teams of three representing each retailer for a years worth of bragging rights, SPY product, and the opportunity for Main Street immortality.
The bull wasted no time disposing of the Jacks team and despite some brave and comical efforts, “Bodacious” the bull made quick work of them, ejecting one after another in true urban rodeo fashion. HSS really brought the thunder in the form of a 98 pound cowgirl known only as “Erin,” who took a doggie style riding approach that would eventually lead HSS to the title. A true underdog story, Erin brought the thunder and threw down the gauntlet for next year with 24 furious seconds taming the mechanical beast.
Inspired by Erin’s performance, some of the SPY crew got a little creative on the bull, including some reverse cowgirls, tandems, and an appearance from SPY’s own Alana Blanchard that really stole the show. I mean, come on, Alana on a mechanical bull? Some one get this girl a burger! All in all this was one for the ages! Spy would like to thank the entire Jacks crew and HSS for their participation and enthusiasm, as well as the Black Bull Chop House and Nathan Vernes for shooting the event. Until next year, oil your chaps and lick your chops and we hope to see you next year!

JLaw & Nick Wey are both in the top ten at Pacific Northwest track; Canadian MX Nats are a washout due to rain, only half of one moto run
Spy Optic’s Jason “JLaw” Lawrence (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy-JLaw Racing) locked down his first 450 class podium finish of the 2009 season, this past weekend parlaying a 10th and an all-important 3rd in the second moto into a 3rd place overall finish at Washougal MX Park, round eight of the Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals.
Lawrence, who’s been injured for much of the ’09 outdoor season, ran well in practice (top six) and overcame a poor start in the opening moto to finish 10th. In the second moto – the one that really counts – he laid it all on the line in the opening moments and came around the first lap in second place. He then clicked off consistent lap after lap to hold onto 3rd place in the series’ premier class, good enough for 3rd overall.
“Stoked I could put Spy up on the box,” said Lawrence.
Joining Lawrence in the 450 class’ top ten was his Spy Optic teammate, Nick Wey (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy-JLaw Racing). Wey’s 7th place effort also moved him up into 9th place in the overall 450 class standings – and easily within striking distance of the top seven.
North of the border the Monster Energy Canadian MX Nationals guys – Spy Optic’s Paul Carpenter and Bob Kiniry (Monster/Cernic’s/Kawasaki) – were involved in a slogfest at MX Ste Thecle, Quebec, Canada, with the opening moto shortened to 15 minutes and the second moto flat out cancelled due to the inclement weather and subsequent mud. Kiniry was 6th and Carpenter 9th in the first moto.
Next up for Spy Optic’s motocross racers contesting the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals is round nine of the series at Unadilla (New Berlin, N.Y.), Aug. 15th, while the Monster/Cernic’s/Kawasaki team will be in New Brunswick for the Riverglade MX Park National this weekend (Aug. 1-2).
