Spy VS Spy

April 30th, 2010

Our good friends at Attridge just took displays to the next level. As if this isn’t the sickest window you have ever seen. A huge thanks goes out to Matt Pedersen and Andy Stein from Attridge in Vernon, BC.

The Spyrate gang once again ventured from the familiar and safe waters of San Diego and headed north to Hollywood for a Dr’s appointment.  We were headed for a check up with Dr Dog who was slated to rock the Henry Fonda Theater on this fate filled Tuesday night.

As we rolled into LA there was the usual traffic jam and white knuckled lane changers scrounging for every inch of the 5 freeway they could grab. The ipod was set to shuffle and we would not be bothered as we eventually made it to LA LA land in good spirits.

Upon our arrival the line was down the block for this sold out show with a variety of ticket seekers and  even questionable homeless men hitting us up every 5 seconds for extra tickets.  Sean, the sound guy for Dr Dog, eventually came out greeted us with our passes to party and rescued us Baywatch style from the anxious line of concert goers.

We settled in with a couple $7 dollar beers and  $11 dollar Vodka Soda (well) just as Deertick opened up with some amazing energy and rocking cover tunes.  After the 30+ minute set the curtain dropped and the anticipation began.

Fresh off a successful stint at Austin Texas SXSW Music Festival as well as a TV spot on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Dr. Dog took the stage at 11pm ready to mind blow the crowd with new music from their newest album “Shame Shame.”

The curtain raised and the crowd came to life! All Arms were raised and swaying to the energetic “Stranger.” Once again the band was off and rocking complete with shades from none other than SPY Optic!

The band rocked for over 1.5 hours and left the house still wanting more. The cd is amazing but live is the way Dr Dog was meant to be heard (in my opinion).

It was 1am and the venue was clearing out. The after party was a brief affair as the band had Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform the next day.

The boys of Dr Dog were definitely stoked on the new styles from SPY since 4 of the 5 members were representing our shades on Jimmy Kimmel the following night.

The streets were wet when we left and headed south on the 5 back to San Diego but no rain could take away from the amazing show we had the privilege to witness that night.  Special thanks to Sean with Dr Dog for the all access passes and Jesse Fulton for the photos!!

Spyrating the Grenade Games

April 27th, 2010

In the land of the great white north, there is an event taking place right now that no parent should ever want there kids to aspire to go to. Daryl Trinidad and myself sailed up from Vancouver and docked the boat in Whistler Village, at the Monster Hotel. We walked right into a our room, which had been trashed by Danny Kass and The Dingo the night before, to give us a warm welcoming. After seeing the hamster cage that we will be staying in all week, we dropped our bags off and headed off to the Sushi Opening dinner. Then next morning we woke up to some rain and clouds so we took our time heading up the hill. The event for the day was called “Search and Destroy” which entailed 4 different locations on Black Comb and Whistler. Once you get to the location, there is a obstacle that you need to perform a maneuver on. Once you completed all the stops, you race to the bottom and get your time clocked. After the race was over, the finalists battled over a game of Asteroids. Our boy Darrell Mathes came in second. After the event was over, Trini and I decided to paint the village red. Today we woke up and headed up Blackcomb for the Dual Mogul slalom race. The sun was out and the course was soft and perfect. People were sending it down this steep bumpy run. Blood, sweat and tears were shed. Tonight is the “Dark-side of the Grenade” A full 80’s dress up party. Stay tuned to see more of Spy Pirating the Grenade Games 2010.

We woke up today and the sun was finally shining. Its was day three of the Grenade Games which meant we would be venturing to the Super Pipe on BlackComb Mountain. As we exited out room in the Monster Hotel we happened to run into the man, the myth, the legend: Todd Richards. Todd needed some fresh goggles, so we returned to the room, so I could give him some new Hip Heather Trevor. As I was giving Todd his new goggles, Trini and I had him sign some of his pro models to hook up a couple retailers that have been dying for his John Hancock. Once Todd was all set up, he joined our Motley Crue (Myself,Trini,Darrell Mathes, Eero Niemela). Once we got up to the pipe, we convinced Todd to get in the mix and bust out his bag of tricks. In no time at all Todd was crushing the pipe with his effortless style, and his wizard wisdom of half-pipe riding. Half way through the contest Dingo and Todd had to leave due to their appointment with a rehearsal for West 49’s dinner, so my good friend Trini passed me over Dingo’s microphone and the Spy Team took over the annoucing for event. After the pipe was all said and done, we returned down into the village for some apres ski shanagins, then out for a nice dinner with the team. As the boys cleaned their plates, we decided to roll over to the monster party. We were sure to sticker up all everything and everyone, leaving our mark in true pirate fashion. Check back for part three of Spyrating the Grenade Games.

Saturday night was the grand finale of Grenade Games: A slopestyle contest under the lights of Whistler. The air was cold and the snow was firm. All the athletes were all warmed up and ready to go. Once again we had a strong crew killing the course. Between the likes of Eero Niemela, Darrell Mathes, Colin Spencer and Kareem El Rafia hammers were being dropped left and right. With Trini on the mic and the boys killing it, you could feel that the night was going to be amazing. After the contest was over and all the awards were handed out, everyone quickly changed and head back out to see “Savage Blade” play at the monster party. The screaming 80’s metal band was insane, kids were moshing, spitting drinks, and getting wild. As the night progressed so did the idea of Trini and I getting a little midnight snack. As you can see Trini’s idea of a little snack is not the same as most peoples. HAHAHA….. I want to give to a big thank you to everyone at Monster for putting this event on, as well as all of our boys who killed it rocking that Spy logo.. Whistler hope to see you next year!

Kevin Windham wins Seattle Supercross!

April 27th, 2010

The Seattle Supercross was once again a wet one! It rained the entire Friday before and the track was wet, muddy, and very tricky with ruts all the way across the track in every section. Many of the top riders including newly crowned SX champ Ryan Dungey were having a hard time staying upright. Kevin and his amazing talent on a dirt bike however made the track look silky smooth! K-Dub ripped the holeshot in both his heat race and the main event and never looked back!

Kevin now sits third in points just 18 points behind Ryan Villopoto who is out for the season. With 2 races left in the 17 race series it is very likely that Kevin will snatch up the runner up position in the 2010 Supercross series!

The entire crew at Spy is so stoked for K-Dub!

The factory Monster Energy Kawasaki team has put Nick Wey back on the team for the remainder of the Supercross season due to Ryan Villopoto breaking his leg last weekend.

Nick Wey finished a strong 6th place and was once again the top Kawasaki rider. Nick has worked hard this year and is really coming on strong late in the season.

Grant Langston has been riding and is healthy after his knee surgery that he had after his bad crash at the start of the Daytona Supercross. He feels that he can be a top contender outdoors and is excited to get back racing! Check out this shot from Daytona in the latest Racer X magazine.

Tommy Searle will sit out the rest of the Supercross series and get ready for the upcoming outdoor nationals. Tommy is healthy and has been testing with the new KTM 250f  which is an entire new bike. He says the bike is awesome and expects to come out swinging when the gate drops at Hangtown on May 22!
