SPY Sets Sail at Lowers Hurley Pro

September 23rd, 2011

Lower Trestles is known for a long, rippable right as well as a long, arduous walk from the upper parking lot. This year’s attendees of the Hurley Pro were able to focus purely on the waves as the SPYrate RV sailed back and forth between the parking lot and the competition area. Of course, we shared our booty with all that came along for the ride.

Parker Coffin Wins His First ASP Pro Jr Contest

September 20th, 2011

Pro surfing phenom Parker Coffin, 15, won his first ASP Pro Junior victory at the Fins Pro Junior in Belmar, NJ, Sept.

15 to Sept. 18. Despite the wind-blown, one-to-three foot surf, Parker’s explosive surfing on the final day captured the

event’s highest single-wave score of 8.33 in the Semifinals and the highest heat-total of the entire event with a score of

15.57 in the Finals.

“I got second last year so I knew I could win this year if I got good waves,” said Coffin, “It’s so funny because you can’t

hear a word out in the lineup and I had no idea what my scores were. We were all stressing out there. I’m so fired up on

the win though.” Fellow SPY surfer Evan Thompson was a double finalist in the event with a 2nd-place finish behind

Parker in the Pro Junior division and a 4th-place finish in the Men’s Pro division.

Purebred Hawaiian Pits and SPY’s Special for the Islands

September 17th, 2011

Torrey Meister is a Big Island ripper with big heart for purebred Hawaiian pits—canine and ocean kine. He’s as home relaxing deep in the barrel as he is waging aerial assaults high above the lip, but pay attention ‘cuz he moves as fast as a rumor on the coconut wireless.

Welcome to the Party, John John!

With style so nice they named him twice, SPY’s John John Florence sits poised and ready to pounce on the

unsuspecting 34-man field that is the WCT. With his first non-wildcard appearance in a WT event coming up September

18-24 at the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles, John John had a chat with the boys over at STAB about qualifying, heat

strategy, and most importantly, “Do I call you John, John-John, or Johnny?” All the answers lay waiting for you  here.

SPY Takes Over the Empire State at the Quiksilver Pro NY

September 13th, 2011

spymidgets

We didn’t have any big wigs in the Quiksilver Pro New York this past week, so we went with some little wigs instead,

picking-up a handful of  “little people”  who were down for a few rounds of boxing.  From the moment the bell first rung,

our diminutive homeboys were throwing blows Rock ’em Sock ‘em Robots-style, taking it to the streets, to the beach

and even spilling the action over to the steps of a nearby hotel.

With skirmishes and small talk concluded, we opted for the comparative discomfort of random conversation.

The crew covered some taxis in SPY graphics wraps, turned on the meters and picked-up strangers who we got

subjected to the SPY version of “cash cab.” Brave passengers who hopped in and answered our questions got a free lift

and SPY swag; those who bombed got the boot and the bill for the ride. SPY finished up it NYC tour with new friends,

scary memories and a stomach full of Big Apple.

It’s Confirmed… Alana is Still Sexy

September 13th, 2011

sexyalanapic

Alana Blanchard is the No. 6 sexiest female in 2011 according to this month’s Men’s Health magazine, proving the beauty of Hawaii is hard to ignore. The hottest female surfer in the world according to the recent Men’s Health online summer review will be looking for a win at the ASP 6-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro women’s event on the Galician Coast, Sept. 15 to 18.

ECSC: Come on, Irene!

September 6th, 2011

The SPY crew headed to Virginia Beach, Va., Aug. 22-28, for the 49th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships. Impending Hurricane Irene sped things along for all involved, forcing heats to run from sun-up through sundown.

While the SPY crew held it down in the sand, our surf team held it down in the water. Cody Thompson and 2011 NSSA/Surfing American National Champion Parker Coffin, 15, surfed their ways into the quarterfinals of the WQS 4-Star-rated event, with Evan Thompson making it into the semi-finals of the Pro Junior!

SPY once again proved to be the crowd pleaser with giveaways and a shooting gallery that attracted thousands of spectators scrambling to get their hands on some SPY booty.

ecsc_crowd

In spite of a looming storm threat, our posse  decided to hold-off evacuation plans and, instead, partnered with a local watering hole, The Boxx, on a pre-hurricane, over-21 shindig.

Cody, aka DJ Code Red, kept the party moving and the shoes shuffling with a body-rocking DJ set that thumped well into the early morning hours.

djcodered

Last call at the Boxx heralded a shift of venues, kicking-off an after-hours soiree where the only rules were no cameras, no stories and no hard feelings.

With the final days of the competition canceled due to the hurricane, SPY took the high road (which paralleled the prescribed evacuation route) with heads held high and stomachs turning from the previous night that officially didn’t happen.

There’s no doubt that the SPY crew helped out ol’ Irene by doing a little damage of its own…

Torrey Meister wins the Bud Light Lime surf series in Ventura

September 4th, 2011

Big Island surfer Torrey Meister won the 2nd stop of the Bud Light Lime Surf Series at the Point in Ventura, CA this Labor Day weekend.

On the beach, Torrey was joined by SPY teammates Benny B and the winner of the 1st stop of the BLLSS Mike Losness.

Torrey’s style is hard to beat and with plenty of swell and a massive kerrupt flip he was able to seal the deal and take home the title.

Along with bragging rights, Torrey left with a huge chunk of change and a truck full of Budweiser to last him a lifetime!
