Torrey Meister win the airshow at the VQS champs

May 11th, 2009

Volcom VQS Championship
May 1-3, 2009
Newport Beach CA 54th street

This was a surf contest that was hillbilly-themed and turned out to be one heck of a ho-down showdown. There were contest workers suited in country hillbilly-theme costumes, animal skins hanging everywhere (PETA approved ;) of course), horse shoe games using toilet seat covers as the horse shoes, peanut sling shot shooting gallery, hillbilly games to win cool prizes, live banjo playing and a country band performances and action packed surfing this was in my opinion one of the best surf events to be at. On top of all that, Newport Beach was blessed with a great shaped combo swell and great weather conditions that gave the internationally talented surfers a chance to win some big cash and display their talents in land of the surf industry hub.

Spy surfers that were there to rip were, Mitch Coleborn from Australia, Torrey Meister and Kaimana Jaquias from Hawaii, Cory Arrambide, Luke Davis and Parker Coffin from California and Nick Rupp from North Carolina.

The Spy team standouts were Mitch Coleborn, and Torrey Meister. They both rip there way into the finals securing some cash and great prizes to take home.

Of the 2 surfers Torrey Meister was in the first final, the grasshopper division a.k.a. air show division. Torrey was on par landing a big front side air reverse in the critical part of the waves putting the pressure on the other 5 finalists. As the clock ran out Torrey was holding the best air winning $2,000.00 and way too many cool prizes for his ripping.

Next up was Mitch Coleborn in the last heat of the day, the Bootleggers a.k.a. Pro/ Am division. Mitch surfed like a rabid animal destroying any wave he could paddle into. You could tell that he wanted to win the $10,000.00 and a trailered wave runner. Mitch landing airs, destroying lips and even tried a crazy back flip where he landing into a sucking barrel but did not make it. When it the final came to an end Mitch narrowly loss to Nate Tyler by .5 of a point. Mitch still took home $4,000.00 and so many great prizes for his spectacular surfing.

This was a great event and congrats to Torrey Meister for the win and Mitch Coleborn for the exciting surfing. Please check back for the surf video for this event.
