Today SPY’s John John Florence kicked off Heat #1 by tearing his competition to shreds with a solid finish that will advance him to the next round. The prestigious ASP event will run from May 3-7 attracting the world’s best pro and junior surfers to the renowned Lowers.

The SPY+ crew recently spent some quality hours on Oahu with John Florence. He went on to win the 2011 Volcom Pipe Pro, but not before we got him on camera at his favorite local spots in the water and on land, from Backdoor, Pipe and Ehukai to Banzai Skatepark and Ted’s Bakery… Country livin’ is good for John.

John Florence is on a terror. He just won the Backdoor Shoot Out and less than a month later he repeats it during the Volcom Pipe Pro and ASP WQS 5 star event. The finalist and their placings were 1st John Florence, 2nd Jamie OBrien, 3rd Chris Ward and 4th Aamion Goodwin.
Jan 5 2011 John Florence won the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout. John was sick with the flu throughout the event but this did not stop John from dominating the 10 foot surf at Pipeline. In the finals John scored a 33.15 points out of a possible 34 points.
John Florence is barely 18 and is already one of the top surfers at Pipeline, Hawaii. In this Surfline interview he talks about his upcoming heat against the 10X’s World Champion Kelly Slater. To read about it and see some pictures and clips of John ripping click here.
